Let me help you plan and document the perfect proposal for you and your partner!

You can make it happen two minutes down the road or halfway across the world. Your favorite spot in Wisconsin, or a mountain in Colorado. You can go solo or take close family, friends, and most importantly your dog along.

Whether you’re planning a big romantic gesture or something personal & intimate, I’d love to help you capture proposal photos & video to document the moment forever.

How it works.

Tips For Planning Your Proposal

Where should I Propose?

Whether you are planning on getting engaged in Milwaukee, Madison, Chicago, Wisconsin, or across the world in the Alps of Austria, choose a location that is special for both of you or reflects your relationship.

It could be where you first met, had your first date, or a place you both love. The setting can add sentimental value to the proposal.

Your proposal photography and video is determined a lot by the location you choose. Here are some links to some proposal location inspiration:

Know Your Partners Preferences

Consider what your partner would appreciate in a proposal.

Do they prefer private or public settings? I always recommend something a little more private. It can still be a public place, but a quieter spot where you can actually enjoy the moment together.

Are they sentimental or do they prefer something more low-key?

Understanding their preferences will help you plan a proposal that resonates with them.

What excuse do I give my partner so they don’t suspect a thing?

Picking something that you two might do anyways in the area is always a good pick. Since the location is likely meaningful to you, I bet there is something that might work for you.

Here is an example that was really successful:

Bryan told Ali they were going to the nutcracker at the Overture Center. There was a show at that time and day, they just weren’t really going.

They arrived early with enough time to go to the actual destination to “look at the Christmas tree in the Wisconsin State Capitol”.

When they got to the spot. Bam. Proposal on the Capitol steps.

Bryan doubled down with “let’s go get a celebratory drink”. Well he had their families and friends waiting for them at Eno Vino for a surprise afterparty. AMAZING.

How will I capture the moment?

I’m definitely biased. But I recommend photography AND video.

For my own proposal I definitely wish I would have had some high quality video as well.

Capturing the moment allows you to relive it in the future and share it with friends and loved ones.

Personalize the Proposal

Add personal touches to make the proposal unique and meaningful. Incorporate elements that reflect your shared memories, interests, or inside jokes.

How will I celebrate after the proposal?

My personal favorite that I have seen is a reception or afterparty celebration with family and friends.

I think the perfect way to set this up from the proposal is something along the lines of “Let’s go celebrate” then having friends and family waiting for a big surprise when you get there.

My favorite proposal reception places in Madison are Eno Vino and The Edgewater, but there are a ton of different options in Wisconsin and Chicago for an incredible proposal afterparty.

What outfits should we wear for our proposal?

I recommend to match the vibe of the location you choose, but also the vibe of you two as a couple.

Neutral tones and outfits are perfect for proposals. It lets us place you two in pretty much any environment and you’ll look amazing for your proposal photos and celebratory engagement portraits.

If the proposal is a true surprise, we don’t want to tip your partner off too much that something is up. So if you would’t normally wear a suit to the beach, probably still don’t wear a suit to your beach proposal.

What will be my proposal speech or message?

Prepare what you want to say during the proposal. Whether it's a heartfelt speech or a simple declaration of love, practicing can help calm your nerves.

Do I have a backup plan?

Understand that not everything may go according to plan, and that's okay. It could rain, thunder snow, and tornado. A backup location is great.

A proposal in the rain would be epic too.

Stay flexible and adapt to any unexpected changes or challenges that may arise during the proposal.

How can I involve friends and Family?

The more distractions the better for keeping the surprise proposal actually a surprise.

Leo totally got Megan with a beautiful surprise proposal in downtown Madison with the “plan” of an evening out with some friends.

Except when Megan and her friend were walking together towards the restaurant and got to the proposal spot. Megans friends melted away and Leo emerged with a bouquet of roses and proposed.

Remember the Purpose

Ultimately, the proposal is a declaration of your love and commitment to your partner. Focus on expressing your genuine feelings and creating a moment that you both will cherish for a lifetime.

It’s easy to get carried away with planning. We will work together to create the perfect moment for you and your fiancé.

Hi. I’m Derrick.

Derrick and his dog Arlo sitting on the steps in front of his house in Milwaukee Wisconsin during the winter

Last year alone I took over 200,000 photos.

Mostly of weddings, engagements, and proposals. But also of my dog.

I love trying new techniques and genres of photography and bringing all of that back into my wedding and portrait work.

My camera is how I communicate best, and I can’t think of a better job than the one I have now.

I truly love what I do.
